Ananya’s Background and Path CSE-Econ major at Brown, PLEME program (class of 2028) Graduating a semester early (December 2027), planning to work January to June/July 2028 before med school Sidequested into consulting via GRC (Brown’s consulting club), rose to leadership, now sells projects to companies and nonprofits Recruited for finance initially, turned down offers, decided it wasn’t for her Research this summer: computational outcomes work in CT surgery and cardiology at Jefferson; finished a cardiac sarcoidosis paper Career Goals and Med School Plans Firmly wants to go to med school, interested in surgery (loves hands-on work, enjoyed OR time) Long-term: wants to be at the forefront of medical innovation, leaning toward med tech Doesn’t want to defer med school for McKinsey (McKinsey requires full deferral to employ her during gap) Radiology ruled out: too much AI uncertainty; her mom (a radiologist) also advises against it CS seen as a foundation for future med tech work, not just a fallback Ryan’s Story and Current Situation Graduated Brown 2026, deferred med school acceptance, currently on a gap year at Google (YouTube Comments team) Previously interned at Amazon (robotics) and Apple 50/50 on returning to med school; must decide by October 2026 Drawn to medicine for the impact of helping people; drawn to CS for scale Finds pure software engineering unfulfilling, especially with AI coding tools like Claude Code reducing skill development More interested in AI/ML or research-adjacent roles, and potentially tech startups Shared PLEME Network and Community Both value PLEME’s flexibility; neither disclosed their program to employers (McKinsey, Google) Sahil Gupta (mutual PLEME contact) also at Google, ~80% likely to return to med school Mateo (class of 2027): dropped out of PLEME mid-junior year to pursue law school Justin Kim: former PLEME, left for startups, now back in med school; was Ananya’s TA for data science Tate (YC-affiliated PLEME): hard to reach; Ananya offered to share his number Erin Kim: Hack@Brown president, class of 2027 Networking and Ryan’s Goal Ryan’s motivation: no existing network for non-traditional PLEME paths; deans’ connections are limited to hospitals and traditional medicine Goal: build a community of PLEMEs taking non-traditional routes, with mutual referrals and introductions Already connected with Abdullah Ahmed (PLEME, Google, working on multimodal medical imaging/language models); meeting him next week Reached out to Erin Kim and others this week Opportunities for Ananya Voyo (formerly Navi Labs adjacent): AI foundation models for pathology and radiology imaging; Ryan can connect her with the chief of staff (also a PLEME) Ananya’s mom is a radiologist who consults for tech companies testing AI models, making this a strong fit Open Evidence: Ryan knows people there; relevant given Ananya’s health background Google referral: Ryan offered; Ananya accepted, timeline TBD around December 2027 graduation Key advice: lean into the unique consulting + CS + healthcare combination rather than competing as a generic SWE applicant Startups and fast-growing companies (Stripe, Databricks, Cognition, OpenAI) better for technical growth than big tech Shraya Ramaya: Ananya’s PLEME mentor, CS-Econ, worked at Google Health, now a family medicine attending at UCSF; Ananya will send her contact to Ryan Next Steps Connect Ananya with Voyo chief of staff (Ryan) PLEME-founded company building vision-language models for radiology; strong fit given Ananya's background. Explore Google referral for Ananya (Ryan) Target timeline: around Ananya's December 2027 graduation; Ryan to look into eligibility and timing. Send Shraya Ramaya's personal email to Ryan (Ananya) Shraya is a PLEME mentor, ex-Google Health, now UCSF attending; well-connected in med-tech startup space. Share Tate's phone number with Ryan (Ananya) Tate is a YC-affiliated PLEME who is hard to reach on LinkedIn.

Hello?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:00:56.967+00:00

Hi. Can you hear me?

Them2026-08-10T21:00:58.124+00:00

Yeah. I can hear you.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:00:58.687+00:00

Cool. Thanks for agreeing to me today.

Them2026-08-10T21:01:02.124+00:00

Yeah. Of course. It's nice to meet you.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:04.217+00:00

Yeah. Wait. How are you doing?

Them2026-08-10T21:01:06.354+00:00

I'm doing well. I feel like the summer's winding down, so I'll have to head back to

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:11.727+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:01:15.534+00:00

Hudson. So I'm, like, happy and kind of sad about that because I'm gonna miss the summer. But I'm excited to see my friends.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:23.607+00:00

Yeah. Definitely. Wait. What are you doing this summer, by the way?

Them2026-08-10T21:01:25.294+00:00

This summer, was just doing This summer, I was just doing research back home. I live near the Philly area. Just, like, some really flexible research.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:34.647+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:01:37.344+00:00

So, like, honestly, staying at home a lot

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:38.827+00:00

Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:01:41.024+00:00

just because I get to work remotely. So things have been very calm for me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:44.747+00:00

Interest is it, like, computational research, or is it more of, like, web lab?

Them2026-08-10T21:01:49.924+00:00

It's mainly computational. So I've been doing a lot of, like, outcomes research

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:01:54.057+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:01:54.894+00:00

So I've been doing some cardiology stuff at Jefferson. And then, initially, I was doing, last summer, I was working at Pennsyl. I just finished up our project with that. But, I I finished that really early in this summer. And then beyond that, I've just been, doing some outcomes work, some people at the med school.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:02:16.727+00:00

Oh, okay. Wait. What's the outcomes work?

Them2026-08-10T21:02:18.984+00:00

It's, like, all for

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:02:20.077+00:00

By the way?

Them2026-08-10T21:02:22.814+00:00

CT surgery, like, things like like, I was just been finishing a lot of, like, the data for some, like, ongoing papers. I just finished up a cardiac sarcoidosis paper a month ago.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:02:31.107+00:00

Ok. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:02:35.964+00:00

So it's, like, kind of adjacent to the Selke lab.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:02:39.597+00:00

No.

Them2026-08-10T21:02:40.164+00:00

But I'm not, like, actually in the lab.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:02:41.777+00:00

Got you. Got you. Okay. Wait. Are you interested in, like, CS or, computation? Or what's the what's your background in? Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:02:49.884+00:00

Well, like, my major CSE con so definite am interested, but I feel like I've never done anything, like, super, like, I've never done, like, a traditional suite internship. It's at me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:02:58.327+00:00

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 100%. And I saw that you were, like, really into, like, Is that what you're, like,

Them2026-08-10T21:03:07.394+00:00

I feel like okay. So I've definitely been side

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:03:07.537+00:00

aiming for right now? Or okay. That's good.

Them2026-08-10T21:03:12.364+00:00

questing, which I'm assuming that, as a former you must have done the same if you're at Google now.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:03:17.537+00:00

Yeah. 100%.

Them2026-08-10T21:03:20.554+00:00

So I think I sidequested a lot, and I sidequested my way into consulting.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:03:25.047+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:03:25.494+00:00

So that's what, I'm doing for the time being. So, I'm in did back when you were there, did they have GRC? Because I feel like that's newer as a consulting

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:03:34.457+00:00

I don't think so. No.

Them2026-08-10T21:03:36.154+00:00

Yeah. So I think, like, we've definitely become more main stream as a consulting club, but I joined that my freshman year, and I've just been, doing that for a while. And I think because of that and the consulting culture that has honestly taken over Brown, then I ended up recruiting and stuff. I recruited too, but then I realized, like, it really isn't for me. So I turned down some offers and stuff.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:03:59.497+00:00

Sorry. I think you kinda you recruited for what again?

Them2026-08-10T21:04:02.544+00:00

I recruited for finance initially.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:04:03.597+00:00

Oh, okay. I see.

Them2026-08-10T21:04:06.754+00:00

Yeah. And then I just decided I didn't

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:04:08.057+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:04:10.584+00:00

actually wanna do that for a whole internship.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:04:13.687+00:00

Yeah. That makes sense. Interesting. It's like wait. Why, like, consulting if I can ask? Like, instead of, like, because I think a lot of preemies, they kind of explore different things, which is the interesting part about, like, the whole flexibility part. Like, some of them, you know, they do, like, finance or some of them do computer science some of them do, even just, like, a bunch of different things that I've seen, like, art history. Is there a reason why you chose, like, consulting?

Them2026-08-10T21:04:38.104+00:00

I feel like for why I choose consulting, I think, like, part of it is because I kinda feel like I accidentally found myself on that path pretty early on because I just stumbled into joining a consulting club early on and then, like, as my time with, the club grew and, like, my leadership positions grew, I just felt like that was, like, natural steps for me. And I think I think right now, is pretty interwoven with finance. I was also in, like, an investment group that's

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:05:09.627+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:05:10.934+00:00

kind of why I ended up recruiting finance too. I

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:05:13.767+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:05:13.954+00:00

think I, like, realized I had free will after that, though. So why, like, ended up actually, like, choosing to stick with consulting? I think it's just I really like how dynamic it is. So I feel like it's fun for me having, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:05:26.637+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:05:26.754+00:00

a new project every semester. And, like, I get to sell the projects for the club too. So it's, like, actually pretty cool reaching out to I guess, like, companies and nonprofits

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:05:36.017+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:05:37.674+00:00

to work with them short term. And I think beyond that, like, for long term career goals, I definitely want to, like, practice clinically, but I'm not completely sure if I wanna

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:05:48.957+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:05:50.544+00:00

stay practicing clinically forever. And I think I do wanna end up a little bit more on, like, the business and tax side of medicine. And I feel like

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:05:56.537+00:00

Oh, okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:05:59.444+00:00

for me, being able to kind of leverage, like, what I've already been doing and then convert that to a consulting internship will put me on, like, a better path towards that for now. So I think that's why I ended up recruiting consulting, and then it worked

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:15.487+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:06:17.414+00:00

out for me. So, I know. We'll see how it goes. Like, I'm

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:20.097+00:00

No. I like that plan. That's that's awesome.

Them2026-08-10T21:06:22.234+00:00

I've made it through college.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:24.297+00:00

Wait. That's that's actually awesome. Interesting. Like, were you interested in, like, I'm assuming since, you know, you applied to PLEMI as, like, a high schooler, like, was consulting part of that dream as well, or did you kind of

Them2026-08-10T21:06:36.954+00:00

We definitely not.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:38.047+00:00

okay. Okay. I see. I see.

Them2026-08-10T21:06:39.544+00:00

I feel like I think initially when I applied, I really was, like, very, very, like, into just getting to med school as fast as possible, which just, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:49.397+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:06:51.234+00:00

that same vein, I think, still true. Like, I still really wanna get to med school ASAP.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:54.327+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:06:56.654+00:00

But I think coming to college, that's when I realized, like, I have time

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:06:58.887+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:02.664+00:00

to side quest a bit before med school. I just have time to kill. You know?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:04.797+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:07.424+00:00

So I think because of that, that's why. And, also, that's but I did know that I wanted to come in CS Econ I really like my CS classes. I just feel bad that I haven't been able to

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:13.327+00:00

Oh, okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:18.934+00:00

that much with it beyond just, a couple, like, personal projects or just, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:19.087+00:00

Yeah. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:23.424+00:00

assisting with research.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:26.017+00:00

Interesting. Wait. Why did you wanna do a CS Econ?

Them2026-08-10T21:07:28.104+00:00

I guess so I applied e and File. Like, I always knew that I wanted to do Econ.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:35.207+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:36.124+00:00

Because I did DECA and stuff in high school. I don't know if you've heard of DECA.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:37.017+00:00

Yeah. I've heard I definitely heard that guy.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:40.714+00:00

Yeah. So I did in high school. I really like me Econ class in high school. So, I was like, okay. I definitely wanna do in college. And then,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:49.007+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:50.594+00:00

after I got into PLEMI, I was like, OMG, I realized that they're so flexible. So I was like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:07:56.467+00:00

Yeah. Understood.

Them2026-08-10T21:07:59.254+00:00

gosh. Like, dropping bio because why would I do that if I'm already gonna, like, learn everything necessary for med school when I get to med

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:07.667+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:08:08.014+00:00

school. So then it's like, oh, like, what can I combine with Econ I wanted to add CS because I feel like I think it's just, a really useful like, field to have some involvement in? Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:18.827+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:08:22.344+00:00

right now in this day and age, but also, like, it's a fun application of math, and I've always really liked math. But I think I was, like, too chicken to do pure math.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:30.467+00:00

Ajá. That's good.

Them2026-08-10T21:08:32.854+00:00

So I feel like it ended up being pretty perfect for me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:35.887+00:00

That's good. Interesting. And did you wanna become a doctor, like, as, like, a child? Or did you have, like, a different dream as a child?

Them2026-08-10T21:08:41.574+00:00

Wait. I did wanna become a doc as a child. I think there's, like, three, three year time where I really wanted to be a lawyer. And, honestly,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:43.397+00:00

Okay. Oh, okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:08:51.514+00:00

maybe I would, like, if I wanted to.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:54.397+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:08:55.224+00:00

Maybe I would drop everything. There's, like, when did you graduate?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:08:57.837+00:00

I just graduated, like, 2026.

Them2026-08-10T21:08:59.764+00:00

Oh oh,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:01.457+00:00

So a couple months ago. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:03.294+00:00

no way. Okay. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:04.007+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:06.344+00:00

do you know Mateo, IDK, his last name, but he was president of Plimy Senate before, like, last year.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:15.827+00:00

Might have heard his name. He's, like, younger than me. Right? I think he's, like, class of 2025, 2024.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:18.864+00:00

Yeah. He's, like, a year below you.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:22.617+00:00

Or sorry. 2028 Above okay. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:25.524+00:00

If so if you were a senior this past year, he was a junior.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:27.377+00:00

Okay. So 2027. I see. I see.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:31.494+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:32.077+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:32.564+00:00

So he ended up dropping out a plea me in the middle of junior year

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:36.047+00:00

Really?

Them2026-08-10T21:09:37.474+00:00

he wanted to go to law school, and then he gave up like, so after like, in the middle of second semester, he gave up

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:44.037+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:44.864+00:00

the, like, cleanly senate presidency, whatever.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:47.917+00:00

Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:09:48.094+00:00

Because he was like, yeah. Hello. Sorry, you guys. Like, I'm not coming back. And we were like, woah. So I think there was, like, a lot of people like that, and there's a lot of, like, public health people, as you, I'm assuming.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:09:58.177+00:00

Yeah. 100%. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:10:00.754+00:00

So I feel like that's, like, very cool, but I think because I waited too long and I didn't really do too much with law in college, that's not my realm anymore.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:10:05.187+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:10:09.074+00:00

So I think I just been like, okay. I'll seed that.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:10:10.867+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:10:13.744+00:00

But I did really wanna be a doctor. Growing up, and I think I solidified that.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:10:17.567+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:10:19.804+00:00

When I would what about you? Like, I wanna hear more about you. Tell me about

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:10:21.107+00:00

Oh, about me? Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:10:24.254+00:00

your

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:10:25.127+00:00

I guess for me, it's a similar story for, like, as you. Like, I think going into college so I applied as, like, a bio major, just pure bio. And then was like, talking to a lot of my friends, And in my high school, there's a lot of, like, computer science people. And they all told me to, like, just try it out just because, like, I'm in the program. I have the flexibility, I was like, you know what? Why not? Let's just try it out. And I ended up really liking it just because, like, I think with medicine, what I think is that the the value of it is a it's a good job of service. You're able to help people, But what I realized with computer science is that like, the impact that you can have can scale Like, you can build products that impact billions. Instead of, like, helping one on one. Like, obviously, like, you know, it's very different, but I think just having that massive impact kind of swayed me And so that's why I did computer science in, in college. I did a couple internships. Right now, I'm in the the Google office.

Them2026-08-10T21:11:24.364+00:00

Oy ga, es que en

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:11:24.837+00:00

Let me know if you ever wanna visit, but see, I'm just taking a gap year. I'm still I just deferred my accept to medical school. But, yeah, I think I'm gonna have a conversation with Dean Jang. My plan is that I don't wanna drop it right now because, like, I think becoming a doctor is, like, a pretty special kind of job. Think it's, a very noble job compared to other occupations. And the other thing about software engineering is that, like, I'm just not sure whether I love corporate. But I think that's, like, what I'm trying to figure out, like, this year. So that's, like, the gist of my story.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:02.024+00:00

Wait. What's state are you from? Are you from Cali?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:07.957+00:00

Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:08.174+00:00

I knew it because you were like, oh, I I was, like, thinking about CS because a lot of people in my high wanted to do CS, and I feel like that's such a Californian thing.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:17.597+00:00

Yeah. Is 100%.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:20.194+00:00

The same. Are you from Bay Area?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:20.817+00:00

Yeah. I'm from San Diego.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:22.664+00:00

Oh, okay. Great.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:24.067+00:00

So right now. But

Them2026-08-10T21:12:25.894+00:00

Okay. Okay. Wait. So, like, a couple things. Like, first, of all, I I think I really resonate with the impact of it all. I think, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:31.517+00:00

Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:35.164+00:00

I I think it's also part of why I really fell in love with the CSE con major.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:40.087+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:40.364+00:00

I think in, like, medicine, a lot of what we do is, like, we save what's already there. But I think if you are doing something business related or, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:51.127+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:53.644+00:00

computer science adjacent, then you're, like, actively creating. And I feel like

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:12:54.037+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:12:58.244+00:00

I don't think I've gotten that much of a burst of creativity before. So it's like to have the same impact that you've always wanted to have, but, like, in a way where you can, like, impact more by, like, creating something, I think that's just, like, so cool.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:11.957+00:00

For sure. Yeah. 100%.

Them2026-08-10T21:13:12.864+00:00

But so you're it was Dean Jang. You're, like, main Dean in the first place.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:17.377+00:00

It was Dean Holland, but I think she she's Dean Jang is in charge of, like, the people who are deferring, I think, is what it is. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:13:26.834+00:00

Have you have you talked to Rafael Davis? He also deferred. Do you recall

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:33.247+00:00

I I know of him. I think I talked to him, like, one time, but I'm not super

Them2026-08-10T21:13:35.144+00:00

Wait.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:38.217+00:00

close.

Them2026-08-10T21:13:38.824+00:00

Wait. Rafa's really nice. But I think he just, like, did more research during his gap year. He just wanted a year off. But

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:45.237+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:13:47.604+00:00

okay. Wait. I feel like this is so Dean Roth is my main Dean, but

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:52.527+00:00

Okay. Nice.

Them2026-08-10T21:13:54.004+00:00

I actually just applied. I just got approval to graduate a semester early. So I also just kinda wanted a gap

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:13:59.017+00:00

Oh, wait. That's gonna be cool. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:03.104+00:00

year because I, like it's, like, really chugged and locked in I got to college, which is, like, kind of great. So I

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:14:08.717+00:00

Yeah. Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:11.004+00:00

all my classes, and I have this opportunity to

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:14:11.367+00:00

That's all. That's good.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:14.534+00:00

save a semester of tuition, which is crazy. But now I need to I wanna work during that

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:14:19.447+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:22.184+00:00

semester, so I wanna figure out And I was actually thinking about, like, trying to recruit for, like, tech or something. So when you, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:14:29.037+00:00

Okay. Perfect. Perfect.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:32.124+00:00

DM'd me yesterday, I was like, oh my gosh. This is, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:14:35.787+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:35.924+00:00

just thinking about that. Like, I guess I just wanted to know, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:14:36.407+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:14:40.174+00:00

why okay. So why do you recruit specifically for, like, Google number one? And then, like, second of all, like, do you like being a suite? You said that you were trying to figure out if you actually like corporate. And like, how you feel like you'll come back to med, like, maybe after, like, the second year? Because I know that we only get, like, two years to for

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:05.227+00:00

Oh, is that what it was? Interesting. You did we did your research one, I did. But

Them2026-08-10T21:15:06.334+00:00

Yeah. Oh, you know, I Dean Dean Roth has been convinced that I'm gonna drop out of the program. She was convinced

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:13.457+00:00

Really? Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:15:16.604+00:00

by our second meeting. So she

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:19.047+00:00

That's an interesting thing to say, I feel like.

Them2026-08-10T21:15:20.124+00:00

wait. Yeah. Like, our second meeting, I'm like this, like, little fresh man, and she's like, it's okay if you drop out. I hope you know.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:24.947+00:00

Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:15:27.994+00:00

And she was like, I'll still be your dean. Don't even worry. And I was like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:29.237+00:00

I

Them2026-08-10T21:15:32.694+00:00

when did I say that? So she, like, has, like, kind of educated me to some degree on all the, like, plea bylaws or whatever. Have you talked to what's his name? A dude named Justin. Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:45.777+00:00

Justin.

Them2026-08-10T21:15:50.154+00:00

he's he's a med student right now.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:50.217+00:00

No.

Them2026-08-10T21:15:53.834+00:00

I just what is his name?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:15:56.147+00:00

What's his last name? Justin. It sounds familiar.

Them2026-08-10T21:15:57.864+00:00

I, like, low key am struggling to remember just in Kim. I like yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:03.477+00:00

Okay. I I don't think I know him. Never mind.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:05.004+00:00

So he three years He was off the cleaning. Now I think he's second or third year med student.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:11.407+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:13.814+00:00

Justin came back to med school recently, and he was my TA.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:16.787+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:16.924+00:00

For one of my for my data science PCE. And he ended up, like, leaving to do startups. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:23.567+00:00

Interesting. Okay. I just switched to say

Them2026-08-10T21:16:28.204+00:00

yeah, he

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:28.327+00:00

interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:30.654+00:00

he's, like, hard to find on LinkedIn. I'll, like, find him, like, send you the right profile. Justin Kim's a common name apparently.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:36.557+00:00

It's a very common name. Let's see.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:41.974+00:00

But I

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:42.547+00:00

Is he in San Francisco right now?

Them2026-08-10T21:16:44.174+00:00

no. He's, like, back at med school, but, originally, he

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:44.697+00:00

Do you know? Oh, he's back.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:49.144+00:00

San Francisco.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:16:49.227+00:00

I see. Okay. Okay. Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:16:55.734+00:00

But he's I feel like he's a cool person to talk to because I think he did something CS adjacent.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:02.807+00:00

Ja.

Them2026-08-10T21:17:05.014+00:00

And then I ended up doing an internship for his cofounders.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:09.137+00:00

Oh, okay. That's cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:17:10.584+00:00

Company. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:12.837+00:00

That's really cool. Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:17:14.844+00:00

So I feel like, wait. Yeah. I found his profile, but yeah, he said that you're not supposed to do it for three years, but he just got, like, a specific exemption because of something.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:24.987+00:00

Yeah. I'm sure they may Yeah. I'm sure they make exceptions as long as you have a good meeting.

Them2026-08-10T21:17:28.944+00:00

Yeah. So I was just like

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:31.567+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:17:32.264+00:00

okay. Sorry. I, like, really digressed. So I to go back to my questions, I guess, like, why Google? Why

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:36.607+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:17:41.034+00:00

sweet do you like it, and do you wanna continue, or do you think you'll come back?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:17:42.867+00:00

Yeah. So it's, like, three questions. So I think the first part is, like, why Google? There's a couple reasons. Like, the first being that, like, a lot of tech companies let's just say I I I don't know how familiar you are with, like, other companies, but, like, I feel like a lot of companies are specialized in, like, one thing. Like, for example, if you know Stripe, focus a lot on, like, financial infrastructure or you know, what's what's a pop like, even Amazon. Right? Like, they are very hard set on doing, like, delivery and packaging. And I actually interned there. Like, the I was on the robotics team. But, like, a lot of them my opinion, they don't have much beyond that. But I think what's good about Google is that it's so big where, like, I'm not to be honest, I'm not on, like, a really great team right now. I'm on, like, YouTube comments, which, like, isn't where I wanna be. But what's really good about Google is that you can, like, switch. Like, there's a lot of cool teams here. Like, I don't know if you've seen, like, the research that Google's been putting out, but there's, like, like, MedGemma, which is, a medical language model that they're developing. I know somebody there, so I'm trying to contact them. And there's actually another play me well, there's two play mees right now at Google, which is kind of interesting. And then we we all have, like, pretty similar goals.

Them2026-08-10T21:19:06.814+00:00

Oh,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:19:09.997+00:00

And the other guy, he actually finished you can search him up. His name is I'll put it in the chat, Abdullah Ahmed. I'm actually gonna chat with him next week. I I already, like, talked to him, like, two weeks ago. We met at, like, a event or something. But he actually graduated medical school and is currently an engineer at Google. He's working on, like, multimodal like, imaging and language for I think, for medical applications. I'm not sure what exactly he's working on, which is why I wanna chat with him, but that's what he told me. So I think that's really cool. Like, there's a lot of areas where you can apply your I guess, your interest in medical to or computer science and medical together. Whereas other companies, I just feel like gonna become or, like, if you join them, you're just gonna become, a software engineer, not really working on things that you care about. I I think that's, like, really important to me. The other guy, I think, his name is Sahu Gupta. I'm not sure if you've heard him. He's my year.

Them2026-08-10T21:20:05.254+00:00

We Wait. You know Sahil? Is he coming back? I'm

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:20:13.227+00:00

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:20:13.364+00:00

Nikki and Ishawn. And Leslie. And I was

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:20:16.597+00:00

I was thinking last night. He's he's at he's in New York, though. So he's not really close to me. But we've been in contact. He actually just started, like, last week. Think he's planning on potentially coming back. Yeah. He's at Google. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:20:31.244+00:00

I thought he was on Microsoft.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:20:33.477+00:00

I think he interned there. Like, we're all to be honest, me and Sahil are really similar because we're just, like, trying a bunch of things. Like, I was I was also at Apple. So we're just trying whatever. But

Them2026-08-10T21:20:45.724+00:00

Do you guys need, like, all cracked CSI con?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:20:46.417+00:00

no. No. No. No. Not. Definitely not. But we're just trying a bunch of things. We're seeing what we like. And I guess we both just ended up at the same place, which is pretty funny. So but he's working on I think he likes his team. Because it's more, like, AI focused is what he told me. But he said that maybe in, like, a year or two, there's, like, a decent chance to appeal, like, come back to medical school. So we'll we'll see. But

Them2026-08-10T21:21:11.814+00:00

Oh, okay.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:13.687+00:00

at least for another year or two. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:15.784+00:00

I see. I like well, do you know you

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:16.967+00:00

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:19.404+00:00

I'm assuming then. Right?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:21.417+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:21.664+00:00

Eshawn and I took a bunch of, like, CS classes together, so we're really tight that. So, I think, I'm sure he knows this about by now, but, like, when was, like, working

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:32.437+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:33.784+00:00

I think, at Palantir or, like, when on his semester off. Right?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:36.797+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:39.264+00:00

Like, Yixona couldn't figure out if he was gonna come back to med, and he was, like, getting weird because he even

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:41.427+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:43.904+00:00

and saw Hill were, like, super tight. And I or I don't know.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:45.137+00:00

Yeah. Oh, really? Oh, interesting. I didn't know that

Them2026-08-10T21:21:49.644+00:00

Yeah. Because he had like, I don't think Sahil had decided yet. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:50.137+00:00

okay. Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:21:54.284+00:00

was like, dude, like, I have to, like, plan grad stuff, l o l. Like, and Sal is coming back for grad, but I don't know if he's coming back for med school. I was like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:21:59.027+00:00

Oh, yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:22:04.094+00:00

l o l. And he was like, yeah. But he probably doesn't know either.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:22:05.967+00:00

Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:22:08.764+00:00

So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:22:10.367+00:00

Yeah. I mean, I think both of us are, like, in similar places where, like, there's okay. Maybe he's more leaning towards medical school because I think last time he told me, was, 80%. For me, it's maybe, like, 50%. It's kinda on the edge.

Them2026-08-10T21:22:28.744+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:22:29.677+00:00

Think maybe this will answer, like, the the second question. That you asked, like, why software engineering? Honestly, like, I don't particularly like software engineering, especially because, like, you're from do you know cloud code? I'm I'm assuming you do it.

Them2026-08-10T21:22:43.154+00:00

Yes. Bro. Oh my god.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:22:44.757+00:00

Yeah. Totally. Right? So, like, the issue is that it's not really, like, a job, in my opinion, where I can develop, like, myself. Like, I think medical school is because, like, you're becoming a doctor. You're learning skills. You're learning new things that other people can't really learn. And you're kinda differentiating yourself. I think with software engineering, especially with cloud code, you're not really learning anything. You're not learning new skills. And I just feel like it's not really somewhere where I can grow as a person. Like, I think monetarily, could grow. But, like, I think as a person, not really. So it's not that fulfilling to me. But I am kind of getting more interested in, like, tech startups and also, like, as I said earlier, just, like, areas where I can apply, like, computer science with medicine. And I think Google is a place like that, if I'm able to get into, a more researchy role or, a AI ML role, I feel like that would be better suited for me is what I'm currently thinking. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:23:50.094+00:00

That makes a lot of sense. It is

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:23:53.687+00:00

Wait. What was the what was the third question? Oh, I'm coming back. I see.

Them2026-08-10T21:23:56.284+00:00

It was, like, about if you're coming back or, like, what you're Sorry. But

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:00.987+00:00

Yeah. I feel like I answered that. Yeah. Like, I just like, it's kinda fifty fifty right now. Like,

Them2026-08-10T21:24:02.324+00:00

you don't know

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:06.597+00:00

the issue is that I have to decide by October, I think, is what it is. Which is, like, I don't know. Don't have that much time, but I think that that's the point of the year. I'm just trying to figure out, like, whether I actually like it, whether this is the life for me, or I wanna go back to medical school. So it's very on the edge for me.

Them2026-08-10T21:24:21.384+00:00

Ahí I feel like the good thing is you definitely have it's so nice to have that backup Like, I think people keep telling me about how, like, lucky I am.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:33.237+00:00

Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:24:34.044+00:00

To, like, be in this position where I have

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:34.637+00:00

For sure.

Them2026-08-10T21:24:37.754+00:00

all the options that I could want, and they're all good option.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:40.427+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:24:43.214+00:00

Which is, like, that's I feel like it's nice to, like, you know, be gratitude

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:45.807+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:24:46.984+00:00

core. So I would say this to you, but

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:48.127+00:00

For sure. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:24:49.854+00:00

I feel like that's a tough deadline.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:24:50.597+00:00

No. I mean, I I appreciate Ping Me so much. Like, it's the reason why I could explore what I could explore. Like, if I was a premed at, like, other schools, it's like, I don't have that flexibility.

Them2026-08-10T21:25:00.884+00:00

Oh my god.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:25:03.507+00:00

So

Them2026-08-10T21:25:04.444+00:00

Bro. Or even if you do, like, an early assurance program, you're still, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:25:07.357+00:00

yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:25:08.424+00:00

two years of college are gone, basically. Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:25:09.007+00:00

Right.

Them2026-08-10T21:25:11.904+00:00

just had flex med come out and, like, all of my best

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:25:15.177+00:00

Dang. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:25:15.434+00:00

friends have gotten in, which is, like, I'm so happy for them. It so but, like, now they've, like, still, like, grinded it for two years and they're either just gonna, like their plan is

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:25:19.487+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:25:26.664+00:00

to, like, not really do anything anymore now because, like, yay. I just got this acceptance. I'm just Slack for the rest of college. Like, you know, what I have to do for the requirements, or they're just gonna keep going with their premed majors, and they never really explored anything beyond that.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:25:38.757+00:00

Yeah. 100%. But I think that's why, like, I reached out to you because I feel like I really respect people who kind of go out of their comfort zone. Like, I don't know. I feel like I saw a lot of preemies who did, like, neuroscience or biology, and I'm just like, I wish you guys would, like, maybe explore something else. But, like, obviously, like, you know,

Them2026-08-10T21:25:59.914+00:00

I think it's isolating.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:00.607+00:00

respect for them too, but I really like it when, like, I see Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:26:04.524+00:00

Like, did you feel isolated when you were, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:07.027+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:26:07.754+00:00

isolated from Plimi rather, like, when you were in college?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:10.477+00:00

I think so. Like, I think other than the pleemies, like, nobody really knew that I a pleemie because I was just another

Them2026-08-10T21:26:15.914+00:00

Yeah. Ya.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:18.057+00:00

CS.

Them2026-08-10T21:26:19.034+00:00

This is, like, pretty nice. I kind of like being incognito.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:19.727+00:00

Yeah. I think it is nice. Yeah. And then when you they kinda figure it out, they're you're just like, oh, I'm actually a play me. And then they're like, oh, wow. Okay. Like, that's so

Them2026-08-10T21:26:30.514+00:00

Yeah. But, like, they don't, like, care all, which is the best part.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:32.067+00:00

Yeah. 100%. But wait. Is is there something you wanted to do like, during that gap year in terms of, like, something you wanted to explore? Because I know you said you wanted to do something with the computer science side.

Them2026-08-10T21:26:43.584+00:00

Yeah. I think, like, now that I've done of, like, the economy side of my degree, I wanted to do something with the CES side, so I'm not, like, a one wonder. You know?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:49.757+00:00

Okay. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:26:56.664+00:00

So I feel like because the thing is it's just like an awkward time

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:26:58.467+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:27:02.224+00:00

but also, I haven't really recruited for Swee or anything along the line. So I guess, like, since this is more of your world, I was just wondering, like, what advice you have if that's something I wanna do, if there are things that I could do during that timing and, like, what the best strategy would be.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:27:16.307+00:00

Yeah. I think there's, like, a bunch of different strategies. Like, I think issue with companies like Google or, like, big companies is that, like, you're just gonna be another applicant. Like, another software engineering applicant and you're gonna have to go through the process like any anyone else. I guess, like, the question here is, like, what exactly you wanna do with a CS degree. Right? Like, I think I actually know somebody from do you know Open Evidence?

Them2026-08-10T21:27:47.054+00:00

Yes.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:27:47.597+00:00

By any chance? Yeah. Okay. Okay. So I actually, like, know some people in Open Evidence. I feel like there's companies like that that would, like, appreciate, like, your health background.

Them2026-08-10T21:27:55.204+00:00

Oh, okay.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:27:57.067+00:00

Right? Or, like, maybe Google like, when I applied, I didn't even say it was a preemie. Like, it doesn't it doesn't really help.

Them2026-08-10T21:28:01.964+00:00

Yeah. I didn't tell McKinsey I was with Plemy either. Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:28:03.307+00:00

Yeah. I'd imagine.

Them2026-08-10T21:28:06.184+00:00

whenever I just leave it out.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:28:06.687+00:00

Yeah. So I think it's a question of, like, what exactly, like, you kind of are interested in and wanna work on. Like, is there a part do you wanna integrate health care? Do you just want, like, a you wanna try out software engineering?

Them2026-08-10T21:28:20.124+00:00

I feel like I don't know. Like, I think for me, I really want something that'll, like, grow me technically.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:28:23.837+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:28:27.804+00:00

At in I think, like, I would definitely be happy to do something that like, combines a lot of the stuff with, like, what I do with health care and med. But I think more than that, like, because I have limited time, I just want, like, a really, like, growth heavy reporting experience that I can, like, walk away from with a lot of, like, technical background.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:28:47.697+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:28:51.584+00:00

To the point that, like, I can, like, call on that same background eventually. Like, one day when I wanna if I do wanna walk away from medicine, like, completely. I think I'll definitely walk away part time, but, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:01.227+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:29:04.524+00:00

to if I wanna go into, like, med tech,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:04.797+00:00

Sure.

Them2026-08-10T21:29:08.444+00:00

will I be able to use that experience?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:08.867+00:00

Okay. Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:29:11.144+00:00

Which I do I think I wanna go into med tech eventually.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:13.167+00:00

Okay. Yeah. Me too. That's interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:29:15.934+00:00

So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:18.137+00:00

Wait. That's cool. And is it like when you say grow technically, like, is that in terms of, like, engineering? Is that in terms of, like, like, how do you how do you define that?

Them2026-08-10T21:29:28.424+00:00

I feel like I'm still trying to figure out how to define that. I think, like, definitely more on the engineering side because I feel like that's kind of cool to me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:33.597+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:29:38.094+00:00

And kind of, like, what you said with Claude code and all of that. I think I just wanna develop more of the systems thinking mind, especially in

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:44.817+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:29:49.014+00:00

realm of CS and SUI.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:29:49.367+00:00

Yeah. I think that, like, I give a bad representation of, like, software engineering. Like, I probably give a bad rep. Like, when you join, like, someone like Google, maybe, like, I'm I'm not I'm gonna get completely transparent. I feel like growing technically will be pretty hard. Just because of, like, the work you're doing is scoped by, like, a manager and, like, I just feel like engineers at, like, Google are, like, big tech. Not known to, like, move fast. Like, I think the best places would be, like, either startups or, like, companies that are really growing, like, even, Open Evidence or, like, I'm I'm not sure if you're familiar with, like, Stripe Databricks,

Them2026-08-10T21:30:30.904+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:30:35.207+00:00

or if you're really ambitious, like, Cognition, like, these, like, AI companies.

Them2026-08-10T21:30:39.554+00:00

Okay.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:30:40.167+00:00

So, I mean, if you're super ambitious, like, you can also look into, like, OpenAI and obviously. But interesting. Okay. Because I I I do know a lot of people in tech industry, and and I'm, like, happy to, like, give you, like, a referral or try to place you in.

Them2026-08-10T21:30:54.824+00:00

Wait. That would be really helpful. I guess, like, for someone who, like, hasn't really, like, done everything recruiting related, like, where would you suggest to start? Like, obviously, I've, like, Lee coded and all of that, but

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:06.417+00:00

Okay. Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:31:08.754+00:00

I'm like, okay. Not the best at Lee code. I think, like, I will just do my

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:09.177+00:00

Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:31:12.704+00:00

homework, and that's fun. I enjoy the theory. But I don't think I, like, build enough So I think that's, like, probably my pitfall.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:21.037+00:00

Wait. I think the you're probably already at the right place in terms of, like, decoding and

Them2026-08-10T21:31:25.624+00:00

Really? But I feel like says you have to do, like, a bajillion more things.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:29.067+00:00

I know.

Them2026-08-10T21:31:31.914+00:00

And you have to be the ultimate go and

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:33.707+00:00

Ruby?

Them2026-08-10T21:31:35.894+00:00

know everything and, like, be, like, a physics champion or, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:40.157+00:00

No. No. No. That's really not.

Them2026-08-10T21:31:42.304+00:00

computer science champion.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:31:44.197+00:00

Definitely not. I think that, like, I think the thing with, like, recruiting is they just have to word it the correct way. And like, you don't want obviously, you don't wanna lie, but, like, if you just stretch it and say the things that you're doing, in a way that applies to software engineering, I think that's what works on your resume. But they I guess, like, they are right that you kind of need projects,

Them2026-08-10T21:32:06.074+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:32:09.657+00:00

So if you want, a top engineering role, like, a general role, you should definitely put projects in. But I know. I think that, like, one of the ways I'm thinking in my mind if I if I can place you somewhere, would probably be, like, easier to, like, tell people that you have a background in, like, consulting and health care. Because, like, if you were to look at, like, a pool of people, and, like, you're just trying to mold into the same group of people, you're just gonna look exactly the same. And so, like, right. And, like, because they also did computer science early on, you might be, like, falling behind. But if you actually look at yourself as, like, a person and, like, what you've been doing and the stories you can tell, and the uniqueness of, like, what you've been doing in terms of, like, consulting, computer science, health care. Like, how many people have been actually doing that? Like, probably zero. Right? Like, I I'm not doing any of that. I know anyone that's doing anything like that. So I think the best way is to paint yourself uniquely and see if, like, you can into those kind of companies that would appreciate it. And I can definitely help you out with that.

Them2026-08-10T21:33:17.654+00:00

Wait. Yeah. That would be so helpful. Oh my goodness.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:33:18.697+00:00

Yeah. Because I I'm actually talking to a guy who was a chief of staff for do you know Voyo? It's a very small company. But

Them2026-08-10T21:33:28.274+00:00

No. I don't.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:33:28.437+00:00

they're not small. It's like you know what neo labs are by any parent?

Them2026-08-10T21:33:35.634+00:00

Wait. I do know Neil Labs. I just don't I've never heard of Boya, unfor

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:33:39.087+00:00

Okay. Yeah. The but they're basically, like, a a super fast growing company, and they develop, like, AI foundation models for I think, like, pathology and imaging. And I just met the chief of staff of them, And funny story is that he is he actually gone to play me, and he was supposed to be in my class. And that's how we kind of connected. He it it was really interesting. It was so funny when I told him I'm fleeing me, and he's like, oh, was gonna be in He he eventually took Berkeley full ride. But, anyway, all that to say the the founder of Voya was actually also a So, like, they are that's what I'm saying. Like, if you just reach out to them, which I can also put a good word in connect you with the guy, like, I'm sure they would appreciate your background a lot more and put you maybe into a role that you're more interested in.

Them2026-08-10T21:34:31.714+00:00

Wait. That would be so dope. I'm, like, looking at this right now. Oh, it's it's vision language for radiology. Okay. This is, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:34:38.957+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:34:40.334+00:00

me. My mom's a radiologist. So I've, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:34:40.807+00:00

Oh, okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:34:43.694+00:00

in the reading room, and now she consults for, like, tech companies.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:34:46.597+00:00

Really? Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:34:49.494+00:00

With

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:34:50.237+00:00

That's so cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:34:50.354+00:00

to test out their AI models. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:34:53.117+00:00

Wait da so cool,

Them2026-08-10T21:34:53.704+00:00

she, like, helps label and things like that. So I feel like this is just, like, so funny to me because this is

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:34:57.847+00:00

Wait. That's perfect.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:01.314+00:00

everything she always talks about at home.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:01.527+00:00

Interesting. Okay. But was was your family, like, a is your family, like, a family of doctors?

Them2026-08-10T21:35:07.234+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:10.067+00:00

Is that why, like, you know? Okay. Okay. Pretty nice.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:11.434+00:00

What I'm used to. So, like, but my parents don't actually want me to go into medicine. What

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:16.157+00:00

Ajá. Right.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:20.324+00:00

like, funny because they're both physicians. And then my uncle is too, but I think beyond that, like so my mom's a radiologist. My dad a cardiothoracic surgeon, but my parents

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:31.157+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:33.164+00:00

so I'm not really tight with my dad.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:33.357+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:36.614+00:00

But my mom has always been, like, don't do medicine. Why are you doing this? You're so fringe. She actually

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:42.327+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:44.184+00:00

told me not to even apply to brown or plain because she was like, you're not even gonna get in. Like, why are you wasting your time right now?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:50.377+00:00

Interest

Them2026-08-10T21:35:50.584+00:00

So I think she just has kind of, like, accepted that this is what I wanna do because she's, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:35:57.367+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:35:57.584+00:00

into radiology at all. Please, please, please.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:00.537+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:01.584+00:00

They're, like, for compromised opinions now.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:03.037+00:00

That would be funny if you were actually gonna be a radiologist. It's like, oh, don't want you to come to a doctor, and then you become a doctor. And then don't want you to go to radiology. You become radiologist.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:11.784+00:00

Genau, jetzt ist, bueno,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:13.577+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:14.804+00:00

I actively don't wanna be a radiologist because, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:17.407+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:17.604+00:00

I really cannot pinpoint where the field is going. She can't either. So I think it's like also, I think I've really found

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:24.267+00:00

Oh, okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:24.764+00:00

in love with surgery, so I'm pretty sure that's what I wanna do. I think I'd

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:28.987+00:00

Good life surgery.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:30.444+00:00

wait. I think I really like working with my hands. Like, I've always enjoyed going and, like, hands on things growing up. And then I think surgery is just, like, I just really enjoyed being in the OR. And

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:43.407+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:45.884+00:00

I think I just, like, fit well into the culture there. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:46.157+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:36:49.554+00:00

to that, And I really, like, don't like just, the regular clinical things as much. So, like, I don't think I could just do, like, neurology or, like, internal med. Like, I've, like, shattered, and I don't think it's necessarily for me

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:36:57.237+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:37:05.084+00:00

And I feel like I can put up with the surgeon lifestyle.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:05.927+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:37:08.354+00:00

And also, surgical robots are so dope.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:12.957+00:00

100%. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:37:15.104+00:00

So I feel like just, like, even being in that proximity is awesome.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:19.267+00:00

Wait. Yeah. Wait. It's so cool. Interesting. Okay. Have you been, like, sewing, like, since you were a child? Is that how, like, you got into, like, more hands on things?

Them2026-08-10T21:37:27.094+00:00

I started, like, sewing in middle school slash high school. I, like, took a big break, so I'm, like, not very

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:34.277+00:00

Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:37:36.194+00:00

good anymore, but I do have a sewing machine. If I had more room, would bring it to me

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:39.187+00:00

Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:37:40.864+00:00

bring it with me to Brown. But

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:41.267+00:00

Yeah. Oh,

Them2026-08-10T21:37:43.334+00:00

I like to tinker and do things like that. And I really can't I really wanna start embroidery soon because I feel like that'll help me keep up with it.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:51.657+00:00

Oh, okay. Interesting. That's really cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:37:55.554+00:00

We want you wanna go into

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:37:57.707+00:00

Yeah. Wait. I I think it's very funny. Like,

Them2026-08-10T21:37:58.574+00:00

Sorry for cutting you off. You can

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:38:02.607+00:00

I think a lot of people that I've talked to have very similar stories. Like, the guy I was telling you about that also got the Brown playmate, had a pretty similar story. But I think the commonality here is that, like, a lot of people their backstory comes from, like, talking to a doctor which is, like, in your case, your mom. And, like, tell you not to do medicine. Which I was told the same thing. Like, I was just curious about it because I did a lot of, like, research since, like, middle school. Like, bioresearch. And I was just like, you know what? Like, I feel like there's research, and then there's, like, things happening in the hospital. I wonder if, like, how it kind of translates. And so that's why I wanted to shadow doctors. But it was interesting because, like, the first doctor that I talked to was, like, no. You shouldn't do it because, like, the hours are so long. It just sucks. You might as well just choose a career that's more lucrative. You can get money earlier. And, you know, the hours are horrible. And, like, she's, like, on call or whatever. And so I was like, interesting. But I think the reason why I like it that I kinda came to like it was just because of, like, I think I said I said kinda said earlier why it shows computer science. But this is also why I chose medicine was, like, the impact Like, I'm really somebody who likes helping people and, like, having impact on people's lives at scale. And, like, I think I when I shadowed her, even though she's like, oh, yeah. I hate medicine, The thing that she was doing every day was, basically devoting her entire life to help people, and I don't think there's any job in the world like that. And I that's that's kind of how I fell in love with medicine. So

Them2026-08-10T21:39:39.734+00:00

No.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:39:39.767+00:00

and why apply? But yeah. That's interesting, though. All of us have, like, a very similar story.

Them2026-08-10T21:39:42.414+00:00

We I Yeah. I think that's why I wanted to keep going with medicine. Like, to

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:39:48.697+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:39:49.204+00:00

despite my mom being, like, so off about it. Because think I had the exact same experience. Like, I just, like, had the best time rounding and, like, getting to know and actively seeing their treatment progress. And there's just, like, one patient whose, like, kidney started failing post op, and

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:40:03.547+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:40:07.774+00:00

everyone, like, all the residents were like, yeah, bro. She's literally gonna die in a week. Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:40:13.157+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:40:13.684+00:00

don't come back next week if you don't wanna be there for that. And it came back. And she actually, like, had a really great program.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:40:20.407+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:40:20.884+00:00

And she, like, made it out. And I like, bro, this is so dope. If I could see more people, like, that, I think I would be really, like, immeasurably happy.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:40:30.997+00:00

Yeah. Definitely.

Them2026-08-10T21:40:31.934+00:00

I think, you you can, like, actually make a difference in how you, like, do treatment. That's just I think I wanna do that.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:40:39.127+00:00

Interesting. And do you also, like, see computer science as something that, like, would help you, I guess, like, help as many people as you want.

Them2026-08-10T21:40:48.144+00:00

Wait. Absolutely. I feel like I really wanna be at the forefront of medical innovation, and I think that's where CS comes in. Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:40:57.147+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:40:58.454+00:00

like, I think that's kind of how we interact with technology now.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:01.137+00:00

Mhmm.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:04.594+00:00

Without that, I really don't see

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:08.657+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:09.214+00:00

having as much scale as we could have. With drug disco, for example, like, all the models that are coming out is, like, it's so cool to see. And, like, now

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:16.617+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:19.524+00:00

they're, like, able to create more drugs at scale for less with

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:19.927+00:00

Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:24.324+00:00

less research time. I think, like, if I would say way more into chem, I'd totally go into drug disco. Also, I just

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:29.167+00:00

Oh, yeah. For sure.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:31.734+00:00

like, drug disco.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:34.587+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:34.734+00:00

I think, like, that is like, I totally resonate with the scale thing. That's why I wanted to do why I fall in love with CS. Like, initially, it was kind of like a what am I doing with this degree? And my like, I think CS is worth, like, you should do that. Because she was like, you'll have something fall back on if you decide to listen to me and not go into medicine.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:41:53.747+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:41:56.044+00:00

So then it was really worth for me. And I feel like the Econ was just I always liked Econ. And I think you should know business to some degree if you do wanna innovate and scale something too.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:42:06.777+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:42:08.984+00:00

Wait.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:42:09.177+00:00

Totally. Wait. That's awesome. Interesting. And yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:42:13.674+00:00

Oh, yeah. Go ahead.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:42:14.357+00:00

No. No. No. Go ahead. No. You go ahead.

Them2026-08-10T21:42:15.444+00:00

I was just like wait. So you reached out to me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:42:15.977+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:42:19.454+00:00

Like, I guess, like, why? Like, you you kinda mentioned that

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:42:23.917+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:42:24.204+00:00

because you don't see a lot of, like, Clemie's drinking, like, beyond bio type things. But also, like, who else have you reached out to or, like, No. No. Because I feel like I haven't really done what you're doing. Like, reaching out to enough people who are

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:42:37.307+00:00

No. No. No. Yeah. I I think there's, like, guess there's multiple reasons. Like, the first one is, like, I remember when I was like, a sophomore, like, I wanted to intern at this place called Path AI. I know if you've heard of them. It's also founded by And the CEO actually did respond And I was like, I really wanna work there. Like, please get me in. I was, like, so desperate because I I thought it was so interesting. You can you can search it up later. I think his name is Andrew Beck. He I think he got acquired recently, but back then he was still a growing company in Boston. So I was so interested in it. But and so I reached out to, like, the deans but what I oh, I think you're frozen.

Them2026-08-10T21:43:22.064+00:00

Yeah. I can hear

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:43:22.807+00:00

Can you hear me? Okay. Cool. But I think what I kinda realized was, like, there's not much connection in the play me space for people that are non... Like, traditional. In terms of, like, their path into medicine. Like, when I reached out to all the deans, like, none of them could help me because, like, I mean, obviously, they would if they could, but all their connections are just, like, you know, doctors, hospitals, etcetera. But there's no network of people who are just doing something different. And that's kind of why I wanted to reach out to a bunch of people, Like, build, a network of people who are just doing nontraditional paths in medicine and build a network around it. Like, I can refer you to people in Voyo or I'm trying to talk to more people in open evidence if that also interests you.

Them2026-08-10T21:44:10.674+00:00

Yeah. That

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:44:13.147+00:00

And think that, like, other people have other, you know, interest in doing different things. Like, like, the guy I kinda mentioned, Abdullah, he's at Google, but working a lot of medical things. So I'm sure I can talk to him, and he could help me. Like, get into a more medical related project, I'm sure. So I think having that kind of network is something I wanna build up, and that's why reached out to everyone. And going off the other question, I've already talked to I actually talked to other preemies this week too. But the the ones I talked to, I kinda talked about already. Abdullah, I I talked to last night. Also, talked to another calendar, actually. There's it's interesting, though, because I also saw some playmies who are doing you know you know YCE. Right?

Them2026-08-10T21:44:58.744+00:00

You so you talked to Tin?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:01.397+00:00

I didn't talk to him yet, I did reach out to him.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:03.594+00:00

No.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:05.657+00:00

Didn't respond, unfortunately.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:07.214+00:00

Wait. Tate's, like, really bad at responding now. Tate was

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:08.667+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:11.084+00:00

close to his friend's year, actually.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:11.647+00:00

Interesting. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:13.874+00:00

He used to on me for doing CS, and then he

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:15.937+00:00

Uh-huh. That's so funny.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:18.844+00:00

his major the next year.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:23.537+00:00

But I'm trying to I'm trying to get contact with him. I'm sure he responds someday.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:28.924+00:00

Ya, o ya. Give you his number if you ever want. I don't have much luck because he's super busy right now, but it might be better.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:34.737+00:00

Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Definitely. Yeah. If you can give that to me, that'll be that'll be awesome.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:42.014+00:00

Yeah. For sure.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:45:42.577+00:00

But there's also some other premise yet. Do you know Ryan I shot him a message. Erin Kim, she was the Hackett Brown president. Last year, I think.

Them2026-08-10T21:45:55.004+00:00

Wait. I don't. Are they I'm assuming that they're, like, older than me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:46:01.897+00:00

Yeah. You're 2028. I think. Let me see. Okay. Yeah. I think they're 2027.

Them2026-08-10T21:46:11.424+00:00

Oh, okay. That makes sense.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:46:12.177+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:46:13.954+00:00

Don't know a lot of the rising seniors. I don't know that year too well.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:46:15.987+00:00

Okay. Okay. But yeah. I mean, maybe one day I can just, like, create, a group chat or something or post, like, an event. I don't know. We'll see. I think just having, a network of people

Them2026-08-10T21:46:27.214+00:00

Wait. That'll be

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:46:30.147+00:00

and, like, building relationship with people is, like, something that I wanna do. So

Them2026-08-10T21:46:32.254+00:00

I think that's really admirable. I think that's really admirable. I feel like I think that's definitely what a lot of the nontraditional flingy made, like, speaking from personal experience.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:46:41.217+00:00

Yeah. I mean, that's, like, definitely why Yeah. I mean, that's, like, definitely what I wanted, like, as a as a preemie. Trying to get into these internships. And, like, I totally understand like, what you mean by, like or, like, the questions you're asking in terms of, like, oh, how do I get in? Right? Because, like, I feel like the deans and, like, the cleanmies can't really help you out that much. Especially if they're in a traditional path. But, like, I can definitely help you out with that. You know when you're gonna be looking? Because I'm assuming you're gonna graduate a semester early, and then did you wanna start that semester?

Them2026-08-10T21:47:14.974+00:00

Yeah. So, like, I'll be graduating December 27, and then I think, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:47:16.227+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:47:21.704+00:00

immediately, I guess, like, I don't know. Like, January 28 to, like, July or June 28, like, up until

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:47:29.427+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:47:32.004+00:00

starts, I wanna work.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:47:32.487+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:47:33.654+00:00

The issue is, like, I I guess, like, to some degree, I wanted to maybe, like, work at McKinsey. It's like I already have that relationship, but like, number one, I wanted to explore a different field in the first place.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:47:43.857+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:47:47.984+00:00

And then even if I wanted to do the McKinsey thing, they want me to, like, fully defer meds school for them to employ me for that time. And I'm not I don't think I wanna defer med school, at least for now, like, is my mindset.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:01.427+00:00

Interesting. Wait. Did you tell them that you got into medical school?

Them2026-08-10T21:48:02.314+00:00

I told him after

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:05.327+00:00

Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah. Like,

Them2026-08-10T21:48:05.574+00:00

I told him after I got the offer.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:09.607+00:00

Google doesn't know that they got into med school.

Them2026-08-10T21:48:11.014+00:00

Dude, I, like, ended up

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:12.187+00:00

So

Them2026-08-10T21:48:14.694+00:00

being like, I don't want them to find out when they do my background check. So I told the day I got the offer, like, after when they gave us, like, this dinner with all the partners,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:23.207+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:48:26.124+00:00

they were really nice about it, and they were like, oh my gosh. You should talk to this person, blah blah blah blah blah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:30.617+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:48:31.004+00:00

So I they were super chill.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:31.957+00:00

Yeah. Definitely interesting. I mean, I'm sure McKinsey's, like, background check is more rigorous. Like, I feel like I saw Google's background check, and I'm like, they're not gonna figure this out. Even if they do, it's like, I don't think it's a big deal for them.

Them2026-08-10T21:48:47.354+00:00

Mhmm. Yeah. I agree. I feel like it's never really, like, that big of a deal.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:50.927+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:48:52.324+00:00

Oh, this just got me thinking. So don't know if you ever did, like, the PLEMI summer mentor program. It was last summer.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:48:59.737+00:00

I don't think I don't know if I've heard of it.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:00.724+00:00

Wait. I did that. I I don't know who made it, but they just, like, I don't know, like, Dave Barnes sent out some email

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:09.087+00:00

Ajá.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:10.864+00:00

blah blah blah. Last summer, I did that. And it was, like, such a good experience because they matched me with, like, basically, just a older version of myself because she also did CS Econ. She's the same type of Indianist.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:23.467+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:25.644+00:00

Me, which is, like, rare breed typey.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:27.287+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:29.174+00:00

And so I was like, woah. This is crazy. And she also worked at Google.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:33.667+00:00

Oh,

Them2026-08-10T21:49:33.824+00:00

But went back to med school

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:35.647+00:00

Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:37.954+00:00

like, end up deferring it because they had some weird stuff going on with COVID. That's when she was

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:42.027+00:00

I see.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:43.104+00:00

graduating. She's a FamilyMed resident at she just finished residency, actually. Now she's been attending UCSF.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:53.627+00:00

Oh, okay. So she's in a sec.

Them2026-08-10T21:49:54.814+00:00

But if you ever want to, like, talk to her that's that's the connection I can offer you.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:49:59.767+00:00

Okay. Interesting. Wait. What's your what's your name?

Them2026-08-10T21:50:04.684+00:00

Your name is Shraya Ramaya. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:09.197+00:00

Interesting. Okay. Definitely reach out.

Them2026-08-10T21:50:12.504+00:00

they, like, paired me with her through the alumni mentor and we're still, like, really close. We're in touch. I, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:17.477+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:50:21.064+00:00

came to SF recently because I did the WASI startup

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:23.067+00:00

Oh, I was there too. Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:50:25.044+00:00

school thing, LOL. Oh, no way. So I did that, and then I, like, met up with her before that, and she just, like, threw me to San Jose and hung out with

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:34.997+00:00

Oh, that's so cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:50:38.574+00:00

So he's like, she's so nice, but, definitely, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:39.267+00:00

Oh, wow.

Them2026-08-10T21:50:44.674+00:00

a cool person to talk to even though she's not really on, like, the tech side anymore.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:45.237+00:00

I mean, I mean, yeah, I think I feel like she has that background, which is really, really interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:50:49.454+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:53.087+00:00

She's like,

Them2026-08-10T21:50:53.284+00:00

Yeah. I think, like, in my understanding, at Google, they did let her work a little bit on, like, some mildly held adjacent roles.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:50:58.767+00:00

Okay. Oh, I see that. Yeah. Google health.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:03.144+00:00

I think still and she, like, I think still kind of

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:05.087+00:00

Wait. That's so cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:08.364+00:00

consults for tech companies right now, or she did while she was, like, in med school slash

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:13.337+00:00

Я?

Them2026-08-10T21:51:14.604+00:00

as a resident.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:16.637+00:00

That's so cool. Interesting. She's class of 2018. Dang. Okay. And wow.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:25.044+00:00

She's, like, 28 now. I yeah. 28. 28.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:28.987+00:00

Dang. Wait. That's so cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:30.614+00:00

Yeah. So I think

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:32.147+00:00

Interesting. Wait. That's true. Uh-huh.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:35.224+00:00

yeah. Go ahead.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:36.617+00:00

Oh, wait. Just so, like, I'm I can connect you with the right people. Like, are you do you wanna work in big tech, or did you wanna work in somewhere that like, purely, like, develops your technical skills?

Them2026-08-10T21:51:46.704+00:00

I feel like I feel like, honestly, I'd be open to either. I feel

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:53.787+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:53.874+00:00

like, too fleshling to really know a concrete answer to that question.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:51:57.757+00:00

Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:51:58.154+00:00

Right now.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:00.057+00:00

Of course. Okay. Makes sense. I can definitely reach out to the right people. Also, like, I'm at Google, so it's like I can give you a referral too.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:05.974+00:00

That's okay. Thank you.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:09.447+00:00

It's okay. Okay. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:10.944+00:00

Wait.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:12.037+00:00

Are you sure? Like,

Them2026-08-10T21:52:13.964+00:00

Wait. What do you mean? Wait. Yes.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:16.497+00:00

give you, like, a referral for Google.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:19.054+00:00

Wait. Yes. But, like, I don't know when the timeline for that would be.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:22.077+00:00

Okay. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:23.724+00:00

Like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:24.877+00:00

Yeah. I guess hopefully, look into it because December 2027 okay. I'll I'll look into it on my side.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:29.574+00:00

yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:32.667+00:00

Yeah. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:32.794+00:00

If, like, if that works, like, yes, I would love the referral. Thank you so much. You're so generous.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:37.057+00:00

Okay. For sure. Okay. Very cool. Awesome. Is there anything else?

Them2026-08-10T21:52:50.174+00:00

I'm trying to think. I feel like you've, like, answered all my questions for the most part. I feel like

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:54.227+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:52:56.494+00:00

now that I can answer or that I can't give you, like, more resources

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:52:56.887+00:00

No, no, no, wait, no, No. No. No. Wait. Not at all. I mean, I'm I'm just reaching out to a bunch of people and trying to create, like, a network. And, like, obviously, like, I'm more than happy to, like, help out. As many people as possible.

Them2026-08-10T21:53:09.044+00:00

Oui.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:53:10.047+00:00

And that's kind of my goal. So

Them2026-08-10T21:53:12.434+00:00

Wait. I'll

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:53:12.437+00:00

yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:53:14.444+00:00

find Shira's email so I can also send you that. Let me find that real quick.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:53:20.237+00:00

Yeah. Absolutely. Thank you so much.

Them2026-08-10T21:53:24.414+00:00

And she, like, put me in touch with like, a bunch of starterbie people. So she put me in touch with Justin, and then the CEO of Navi, which is a startup that I interned last year. And so I got my internship, LOL. So

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:53:40.237+00:00

Oh, wait. That's it. Yeah. Well, I feel like that's the power of networking.

Them2026-08-10T21:53:45.774+00:00

I feel like yeah. So I think, hopefully, she'll probably also be able to put you in touch with

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:53:51.377+00:00

Yep.

Them2026-08-10T21:53:51.614+00:00

like, the right people, especially given, like, the shared Google time.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:53:54.817+00:00

Yeah. Wait. Absolutely.

Them2026-08-10T21:53:55.984+00:00

K. Let me just that. Also, I feel like wait. Yeah. I found her personal one, which is, like, easier because I don't think she's as responsive on her alumni one.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:10.577+00:00

Okay. Yeah. Let me Okay. Yeah. That makes sense. Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:54:14.854+00:00

Anymore. Okay. Here it is. Then, also, do you mind if I get your number? I feel like

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:19.967+00:00

Oh, yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:54:23.514+00:00

easier to reach than on LinkedIn.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:24.557+00:00

Oh, yeah. No. No. Yeah. I feel like LinkedIn is kinda I feel you're really fast. Out of all the people that I messaged, you were, the fastest, which I really

Them2026-08-10T21:54:30.634+00:00

Will you I mean, on a really Caught me on a really good day because I've deleted all my social media, and I

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:34.337+00:00

Uh-huh. Okay. Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:54:38.864+00:00

LinkedIn deleted, but I got a Gmail notification.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:41.617+00:00

Okay. Okay. That's awesome.

Them2026-08-10T21:54:42.434+00:00

So I was like, oh, okay. I did

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:43.657+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:54:45.724+00:00

Wait. This is

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:47.187+00:00

Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:54:50.034+00:00

bro, I'm just, like, so flabbergasted.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:54:50.387+00:00

Wait. No. No. Wait. No. No. No. I feel like that that's what people should be doing. I feel like like, especially being in a tight knit community like Play Me, it's just like the we should be, like, helping each other out kind of thing. And I feel like that's what I'm trying to do.

Them2026-08-10T21:55:05.474+00:00

Wait. This is true. I think and I think that's so admirable. I think I'm I'm gonna just give you text so you have my number.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:55:10.667+00:00

Okay. Yeah. Also, was there anything else besides sewing that you were interested in as a child? That made you wanna do medicine, or is it, like, purely, like, sewing and getting your hands dirty?

Them2026-08-10T21:55:26.564+00:00

Guess it for me, it was also kind of, like, the bio thing. Like, I think I started to

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:55:31.247+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:55:32.004+00:00

my interest in medicine, like, once I started doing bio research. And I was like, I like this, but I want to apply it to see visible impact in people.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:55:40.567+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:55:43.674+00:00

That's kind of why medicine. And, also, just, like, it was, like, specifically, I think I knew for sure like, that, I guess, that post op patient that I told you about, that's when I knew, like, for sure, this is for me. But I think, like, other things growing up as a child, I know. Like, low key, I was just, like, nerd core, and I didn't really do that much as

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:01.927+00:00

No. That I No. That that was me too. So

Them2026-08-10T21:56:05.474+00:00

a child. Really? I think the first inclination is on in my kindergarten yearbook, it says that I wanted to be a pediatrician.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:11.167+00:00

Oh, wow. That

Them2026-08-10T21:56:14.184+00:00

So I do have, like, recorded evidence of information.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:19.127+00:00

yeah. Wait. That's so cool. What the heck? Interesting. I feel like when I was that age, I was like, I wanna be an astronaut or something.

Them2026-08-10T21:56:28.634+00:00

Wait. I was, like I don't know why. I was just being, like, nerd and

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:29.867+00:00

No. Wait.

Them2026-08-10T21:56:32.704+00:00

emo. Every

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:32.887+00:00

No. Wait. That that's so cool. It's actually so cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:56:34.414+00:00

like, a hairdresser, bro. I I should have said that. I just

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:38.647+00:00

Oh, okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:56:39.384+00:00

got scared of cutting hair, though.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:43.077+00:00

Interesting. Cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:56:45.874+00:00

Did you, like, have was there anything else when you were a kid that you feel like could have contributed?

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:56:51.977+00:00

I mean, I feel like family is always, like, a big like, influence. Like, kinda like how your mom, I'm sure, it was, a huge influence. Like, my dad was heavy on, like, bioresearch, which is why I got into that in the first place. He was at UCSD, like, dermatology research. And as a kid, I was like, just following him in the lab. Like, he didn't wanna hire, like, a caretaker. So he was like, you know what? Just sit in my office.

Them2026-08-10T21:57:18.114+00:00

Oh,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:57:19.517+00:00

So me and my brother would just sit in his office every single day, And I think just watching him commit to that kind of life so interesting to me, and that's kind of why tried it out myself. Like, he works so hard. And to this day, every single conversation that I have to my dad with my dad, even, like, dinner, lunch, whatever, is, like, about his research. Like, he's so committed to the craft. I feel like it's so admirable to me.

Them2026-08-10T21:57:42.354+00:00

My god. Wait. That's so cool. I feel like I had the same experience because, like, when my mom was in residency, she would bring

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:57:47.187+00:00

Ajá.

Them2026-08-10T21:57:51.814+00:00

like, for her overnight shift sometimes if she couldn't get a sitter to, like, the radiology reading room, and I would just, like, sleep on chairs. Like, you know, it. And I would just, like, watch her read cases. So I think

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:02.847+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:05.674+00:00

that's and she her office, sometimes she works from home. Her office is, like, behind my room. So, like, if I'm, like, oh, mom, blah blah blah. If I wanna bother her, I go to her office, and she's like she has, like, these CTs pulled up.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:16.427+00:00

Dang. Wait. That's so cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:18.804+00:00

Feel like that's just like, I'm so used to that. And sometimes you'll be like, and then you come here. Wanna, like, show you something. She gets excited, like, if they're funny in cases. Sometimes, like,

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:24.097+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:27.844+00:00

people will swallow chicken bones.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:28.037+00:00

Interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:30.624+00:00

Those are so fun for her. So she'll, like, show me that, like, Sam's hip

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:32.737+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:35.144+00:00

and all.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:37.127+00:00

Oh, wow.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:38.224+00:00

Identified.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:38.377+00:00

Yeah. Oh my Wait. That's so cool. Interesting. Wait. Is there a reason why you don't wanna go into, like, radiology? Is it just because it's so uncertain right now?

Them2026-08-10T21:58:47.754+00:00

It's mainly the uncertainty. I think, like, also just surgery definitely, like, a love for me.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:58:52.547+00:00

Okay. It's more free. Got you.

Them2026-08-10T21:58:53.914+00:00

And he's, like, actively being, like, due to I'm a radiologist. I don't know if field is gonna survive at the, like, the way that it's been surviving when you

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:04.077+00:00

Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:04.234+00:00

Here. So I think she thinks that it's not really the move, but I think, like, at least with the background that I've tried to develop in, like, CS and Econ, I think. Like, that should set me up if I really wanted to. But

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:18.287+00:00

Richard.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:20.474+00:00

I just don't think it's really worth the uncertainty. And, honestly, I can tell you for sure. Like, radiologists are using AI programs a lot, and they are getting very good.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:27.857+00:00

Okay.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:30.304+00:00

I don't know how long it'll last.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:30.667+00:00

And Yeah.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:34.764+00:00

It's like the tools get better. Like, right now, the tools

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:35.477+00:00

True.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:39.284+00:00

the best, so, obviously, we still need radiologists. But

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:41.457+00:00

Yeah. And the the way or, like, the pace the AI is accelerating think, we'll we'll see. Like, I I can't say for sure.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:49.884+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:50.567+00:00

But it's definitely interesting.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:52.224+00:00

Yeah.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:53.597+00:00

Cool.

Them2026-08-10T21:59:55.534+00:00

I guess, like, I just thought of, like, other questions about, like, if you've ever done, like, research and stuff at Brown.

Shivansh Soni2026-08-10T21:59:59.157+00:00
